Just $95/month gets you access to this wonderful facility!

What is TechShop?

In their own words, “TechShop is a community-based workshop and prototyping studio on a mission to democratize access to the tools of innovation. Packed with cutting-edge tools, equipment and computers loaded with design software featuring the Autodesk Design Suite, TechShop offers the space to make, and the support and camaraderie of a community of makers.”

Why are we so excited about this collaboration?

Long Arm. C&C. Lasers. Adobe. The list goes on and on. Membership to the TechShop gives you access to many tools that might otherwise be cost-prohibitive to own or too bulky to store. Think about the ability to laser-cut your own custom acrylic templates to get perfect cuts on every quilt. Think about being able to baste a king-size quilt on their long arm frame, or even use the tablet technology to quilt it! Large tables, design software, the list goes on and on! All under one roof and open late. This is a great new benefit we are able to offer our paying members, in addition to local and national MQG benefits. The TechShop will be validating that your membership is in good standing – so make sure to renew your dues promptly each year!

Why is membership more beneficial than a day pass?

Well, we’ll leave it up to you to do the cost-benefit analysis, but membership offers the ability to reserve time on machines, and not rely on walk-in privileges. There are no extra rental fees, and no payment required to use machines. Members also get discounted rates on Safety and Basic Use (SBU) classes (the class you need to take to be certified on a machine and be able to use reserve it), and members of the guild and TechShop will be able to request classes and not be reliant on the regular schedule.

My spouse/child/household member wants to “quilt” and take advantage of other TechShop benefits, can they join?

Absolutely! Similar to their regular membership rules, spouses, children (8-21), and domestic partners can join with you at a special family rate, $50/month (read: you don’t have to pay for two full memberships if you both join for the same month/months). Here’s the official TechShop line, “Add your spouse or domestic partner (living in the same household), or your child or grandchild (age 8-21), to your current and active Individual Membership.”

I’ve rounded up some of my best sewing buddies and we are new to the TechShop, what next?

Why, take a class together to get certified on a machine! Class cost is based on equipment type and most classes can be offered 7 days a week – you’ll have to work with the TechShop to schedule (call the front desk, give them all of the pertinent info, the education director will coordinate with appropriate teachers), but this is a great option if you don’t see a SBU you’ve been waiting for on their schedule.

With respect to the textiles area, according to their current policies, there are separate SBU classes for the Basic Sewing Machines, Industrial Sewing Machines, Embroidery Machines, and the Long Arm Quilter.
